The six inch take off

heel.jpgPerceptions of beauty in women over geographies and time have been diverse.

In ancient times, women followed practices like – Chinese foot binding, wearing golden rings to streach the neck and wearing whale bone corsets that crushed ribs to give perfect shape to the body. These are barbaric in the least.

Things that a modern woman does – wearing make-up, piercing the skin, etc might pass of as a woman’s right to make a choice. But, consider these – liposuction, silicon implants, extreme dieting, induced vomiting and six inch heels. Now a days, 12 year old girls resort to dieting. Are these practices a result of carefully considered choices?

Media sets the perception of beauty today. Not just that. It propogages the assertion that, such beauty is achivable. Below is a video, Dove Real beauty that does a good job of showing the process behind bringing an average looking woman with blemishes as a perfect model to the screen.

No wonder our perceptions are so distorted.
